Better-for-you ways to enjoy ice cream

There are many choices when it comes to treating yourself to a dessert or snack. With March being National Nutrition Month, here are a few ways you can still treat yourself every now and then without it getting in the way of your nutritional goals.

Check the label

Moderation is important to maintaining a healthy diet. Reading and understanding nutrition labels are essential to making the best choices for you.

Try smaller portions

One of the best ways to control how much you consume is never eat anything straight out of the container. That’s true … however, our best intentions fall aside when we fill our ice cream bowl until it’s overflowing! A suggestion is to use a small dish or tea cup to control your portion.

Fill up on fresh toppings

Everyone loves a hot fudge sundae every now and then, but fresh fruit and nuts are the perfect topping for many frozen treats, including frozen yogurt, sorbet and sherbet. Begin with a small scoop and add fresh raspberries, blueberries, coconut, almonds, cherries … the list goes on forever!

Ever try fresh strawberries sprinkled over a small scoop of Lemon Sorbet? How about walnuts with a scoop of Smooth Churned Banana Cream Pie? Or why not a handful of banana slices over a small serving of Slender Neapolitan?

You can still have all the taste, but by balancing your portion and working in some better-for-you toppings, you’ll have made a smart choice and a delicious snack!
