Bioengineered Food Disclosure

The United States has one of the safest food supplies in the world.

Recently, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) created rules for food labeling – called the National Bioengineered Food Disclosure Standard (NBFDS) – requiring manufacturers and retailers to include mandatory, uniform disclosure for certain bioengineered foods and bioengineered food ingredients on food labels.

Bioengineered food is defined by USDA as a food that contains genetic material that has been modified through certain laboratory techniques and for which the modification could not otherwise be obtained through conventional breeding or found in nature.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the U.N. World Health Organization (WHO), among others, have approved bioengineered crops as safe, but a disclosure for these foods and ingredients is now mandatory on all packages and labels under the NBFDS.

Pierre’s has some products that contain bioengineered ingredients. We have chosen to use the allowed quick-response (QR) code on our package, along with a toll-free phone number (800-888-7981), to conveniently provide consumers the most up-to-date list of products that contain bioengineered food ingredients.
